Monday morning, December 30, 2024, the USDA reported 23,000 tons of U.S. soybean oil sales to the world’s largest, by far, vegetable oil importer, India. The sale was large enough volumetrically that it triggered the USDA’s daily reporting requirement, as opposed to lower volume sales that get aggregated into the weekly summary issued each Thursday. The daily reporting requirement is designed to alert all market participants that a significant tonnage of an agricultural commodity (it could be wheat, corn, soybeans, or soybean meal) is leaving the country.
